Hundreds
or Thousands of Miles of Distribution Lines
Ensuring
the integrity of hundreds or thousands of miles of line is
a critical and time-consuming responsibility of distribution
system managers. Distribution lines are vulnerable to conditions
ranging from severe weather conditions to equipment failure
and human intervention. These conditions, in turn, may affect
radial distribution feeders, causing numerous short-circuit
events including symmetrical faults (three-phase) and unsymmetrical
faults (single-line to ground, double-line to ground, and
line-to-line).
Replace
the Conventional Approach of Walking the Line
The
conventional approach of sending linemen out to find the faults
by physically walking the lines is both time-consuming and
costly. Although power managers have long recognized that
the key to cost-effective system maintenance depended on quickly
identifying the source and location of faults, there has
until now been no power quality monitoring instrument
capable of replacing the tried-and-true method of physical
inspection of power lines.
The
Radial Fault Locator AnswerModule identifies a fault, determines
its type (three-phase to ground, double-line to ground, line-to-line,
or single-line to ground) and estimates the distance from
the monitoring point to the fault. The AnswerModule can be
installed remotely into any InfoNode, with setup inputs including
ground pickup current, phase pickup current, ratio of fault
peak current to pre-fault peak current, and sequence impedance
unit (positive and zero). Based on the collected data, the
Radial Fault Locator AnswerModule calculates upper-distance
and lower-distance measurements.

Accessible
from any computer equipped with a web-browser, the answers
generated by the AnswerModule allow managers to immediately
dispatch linemen for repairs, saving both time and money.
